A new personal best by Annsert Whyte (49.30 seconds) propelled him to second place in the men’s 400 metres hurdles at Jamaica’s National Championships on Friday and booked his place on the Jamaican team to the World Championships in Moscow. At the half-way mark, Whyte seemed out of the running; but he seemed to suddenly wake up and in a late burst just failed to catch Leford Green, who won in 49.20. Third was Isa Phillips in 49.59. Shavon Barnes, the other Racers finalist, was disqualified for a false start.
Whyte switched to the event only this season, and has been consistently improving his times. A schoolboy 400 metres champion, he will be making his first national team to a worldwide competition.
