Glen Mils was on Saturday 3 November conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of the West Indies at Mona. Mills is the Founder-President and Head Coach of Racers Track Club, which is based at the Mona campus of the university in Kingston, Jamaica.

Over a long career spanning more than forty years, Mills has coached at all levels of the Jamaican athletic system — from grassroots community club competitions and high school championships to national and international competitions, where his successful charges include Jamaican schoolboy Ray Stewart at the 1984 Olympics and Kittitian Kim Collins at the 2003 World Championships. Not only is he the coach of the two fastest athletes of all time — Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake — but, in his most recent success, his charges won five of the six available medals in the men’s short sprints at the London Olympics.

This is so befitting of someone who has invested time and effort into honing his craft and sowing seeds of greatness into the pride of a nation. There are many who would claim to be better but the proof is evident in the results of your athletes. You deserve the honour and I hope that those who look one will see you not just as a coach of true merit but of unparalleled DEDICATION.
