Racers Track Club has started training for the new season since the beginning of October, its ranks strengthened by a bright bunch of young athletes. These athletes, along with most of the confirmed members of the Club, can be seen going through their paces most afternoons at the Mona Bowl field of the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.
Notable names among the freshman class are Javarn Gallimore, 4th in the 400 metres hurdles at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona last summer; and Jazeel Murphy, 5th in the 100 metres and a member of the silver medal-winning Jamaican sprint relay team at those games. The fifth place finisher in the women’s 400 metres at the same World Junior Championships, South African National Junior Record-holder Justine Palframan (51.87) has also been doing her early-season training as a part of the Racers Club.
The top two finishers in the 100 metres Girls Class 1 at the last Champs, the Herbert Morrison duo of Seidatha Palmer and Kenesha Stephens, have also been training with the Club.
Here is the full list of new athletes. Men: Javarn Gallimore, Carlton Cousins, Garfield German, Jazeel Murphy, Marvin Blackwood, Denard Coote. Women: Seidatha Palmer, Kenesha Stephens, Justine Palframan (South Africa).
The club has also secured the services of masseur Jeffrey King.
The returning Olympians will start training at the end of the month.
A few more athletes are expected to join between now and January.
