Jason Young raised a few eyebrows with a superb 19.86 seconds win out of lane 2 in the men’s 200 metres (wind +1.5) at the Spitzen Leichtathletik meeting in Lucerne (Switzerland) today Tuesday 17 July. In running a big personal best to beat his Racers club-mates Warren Weir (second in 20.11) and Marvin Anderson (fourth in 20.59) Young established himself as the third fastest man over the distance in the world this year and tied with the great Don Quarrie as the third fastest Jamaican ever over the distance. The favourite Weir, running in lane 5 ahead of Young, seemed to have run a controlled race — unaware that his club-mate unsighted was closing fast.

Young had just an hour and a half earlier run a personal best 10.06 seconds to win the 100 metres B race (wind +1.0). The A race was won by another Racers club-mate Yohan Blake in 9.85 (wind +1.6).

The 400 metres men saw a sweep of the first four places by Racers athletes: (1) Allodin Fothergill 46.23; (2) Edino Steele 46.35; (3) Nicholas Maitland 47.00; (4) Demar Murray 47.38. Javere Bell did not start.

In the women’s 400 metres hurdles A race, Ristananna Tracey from lane 8 ran a good race capped by a strong finish to come third in 56.57. Nickeisha Wilson came third in the B race in 56.60.

In the women’s 200 metres B race, Celia Walters won in a personal best 23.56 (wind +0.9).
