Racers 1-2-3 Sweep in Men’s 200 at JA Trials

The curtain came down Sunday on the 2012 Jamaican Championships with a 1-2-3 sweep of the men’s 200 metres by Racers athletes. Leading the charge was Yohan Blake in 19.80 seconds (wind -0.5). Usain Bolt was second in 19.83. Young Warren Weir clinched a potential Olympic team spot with his third-place 20.03, after running 19.99 in the semi-finals. Jason Young came in seventh in 20.71. Marvin Anderson did not face the starter. Neither did Schillonie Calvert in the women’s race.

Rosemarie Whyte was the best placed Racers representative in the women’s 400 metres finals. She came second in 50.78 seconds. Shereefa Lloyd came fifth in 51.70 and Davita Prendagast eighth in 52.54.

National record-holder Jermaine Gonzales made sure of his place on the Olympic team with a third-place 45.18 in the men’s one-lapper. Potentially joining him on the relay squad will be Edino Steele who came fifth in a personal best 45.38. Young Javere Bell just missed out with a seventh-place 45.89.

The official team to London is expected to be announced in the next few days by the island’s administrative body for athletics, the JAAA.
