Wally Ungerer and Coach Shaun Powell – Two weeks is too short

Wally is a junior athlete from South Africa. He visited with us for two weeks after his father persuaded us to have him and his coach. We wondered what he could learn in two weeks. We have the coach’s feedback in his own words.

Dear Cynthia and Coach Mills

 

Once again thank you for the tremendous opportunity that you have allowed for us to attend the Racers Club.

Our reception when we arrived at the training sessions made us feel that we have been part of the club for years and never at any stage did it feel like we were outsiders.

 

This opportunity has taught a lot and will definitely improve and develop my athletes performances.

 

The commitment that was shown by all the coaches and other staff was excellent and ensured that our stay was inspiring, fruitful and most enjoyable.

The patience that everyone showed towards us was outstanding especially when I asked the same question a few times.

 

What was also amazing was the amount of commitment that was shown towards Wally, an athlete that is not part of the club. Never at anytime did it feel as though we were bothering anyone. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be called Coach, and even more of an honour when Usain and Yohan did that. This was a great honour.

The support that the athletes, and by that I mean Yohan Blake, Usain Bolt , Warren Weir and all the others, that was shown towards Wally was really inspiring and makes the hard sessions easier. Any young aspiring athlete can only benefit from this encouragement especially when you are extremely fatigued. The time trial session was like running in a competition where the support came from all around. .

 

The time taken by coach Mills to come and sit down with me and teach me was not only educational but was also a great honour.

 

The accommodation was excellent and was advantageous that it was in walking distance from the track. The shopping experiences were also nice and we are in gratitude to you for showing us around.

 

We were tremendously sad to leave as we felt that we were part of the set up at the Racers Club and I would like to thank you and your entire team for everything that was done for us in making our stay most exciting and comfortable.

 

We look forward to visiting you again and hopefully not in the to distant future.
