Rosemarie Whyte has much to be pleased about for her 2012 season. She got a bronze medal as part of the Jamaican 4×400 metres relay team at the London Olympics. She was a finalist in the individual 400 metres at these same Games. And near the end of the season she ran her personal third best time: 50.08 seconds.

But Rosie is not ready to rest on her laurels. When we caught up with her recently after a hard training session under the eagle eyes of coach Glen Mills at the Mona Bowl field of the University of the West Indies, she expressed dissatisfaction with her placing in that 400 metres final in London. That is one of the things she plans to improve on next summer when, if all goes according to plan, she expects to be a part of the Jamaican team to the World Championships in Moscow. The first part of the plan involves the hard work she is putting in at this early stage of the season.

Rosie has always been a hard worker. But her body has not always been kind to her. In 2008 she became the Jamaican National Champion at 400 metres in a then personal best 50.05 and reached the final of the Olympics in Beijing. The she went through a couple of disappointing seasons. A hamstring injury she had picked up in 2006 prevented her from completing season after season.

So, for Rosie, the most pleasing aspect of her 2012 season is perhaps the fact that she ended it without injury. This has been so since she joined Racers Track Club. She gives due credit for this; and for her personal best of 49.84 which she ran in 2011.

This coming year she has her sights set on bettering her personal best and improving her placing at the World Championships. She knows this won’t come by wishing and hoping. Only by more of the hard work she is now putting in.
