Yohan Blake blazed to 9.84 seconds (wind +0.5) to win the men’s 100 metres at the first Cayman Invitational meet on Wednesday 9 May, two-hundredths of a second outside his personal best. His Racers team-mate Warren Weir continued his steady improvement, winning the 200 metres in another personal best 20.13.
Running with the big boys for the first time, Kemar Bailey-Cole took too long to get started and ended up sixth in the 100 metres in 10.29. In a rare 200 metres appearance, quarter-miler Jermaine Gonzales did a creditable 20.79 for fifth.
The best Racers (and Jamaican) male over 400 metres was Ricardo Chambers, third in 45.87. Jermaine Gayle, who arrived in Cayman the same day of the race because of exams, came fifth in 46.53 — almost a second slower than his breakout time in Kingston four days earlier.
Nickeisha Wilson, 13.00 for fourth in the 100 metre hurdles, showed that she is world-class in both the short and the long hurdles; and may have to make a choice at or before the National Championships. Ristananna Tracey came sixth in the 400 metre hurdles in 57.83.
Jamaican victories by non-Racers athletes were Novlene Williams-Mills, 50.35 in the women’s 400 metres; and Hansel Parchment, 13.31 in the men’s 110 metre hurdles.
