Jakub arrived on a Saturday and by Sunday he had walked out of the hotel by himself, met a stranger who took him to the airport to collect his luggage and to two supermarkets searching for the scarce ripe bananas. After that he decided, that contrary to what he had heard about Jamaicans being aggressive and always smoking marijuana, they were normal people and he was in a fairy tale. This was the start of a very short but full two weeks for this young athlete from Slovakia.

After the first two days of training, Jakub was ready to call it quits. His ego was shattered when he saw all the athletes running so fast. That soon changed. He was seen working hard and paying keen attention to the instructions of his coach. He was very surprised at the improvements he made in such a short time.

Jakub feels he has learnt so many new skills and he is very anxious to practice them when he gets home. He feels sad about leaving Jamaica. Two years is the minimum time he thinks he should spend here. He will have fond memories of the food, “It is great and very spicy and large servings,” he said. Also the football match he attended all by himself,( he said it was special and very interesting and he has never seen so many people in such a large stadium screaming and cheering) and the people. He even learnt a few of the Jamaican expressions.

Jakub wants to thank coach Shand, who has promised to keep in touch with him, Cynthia, Usain and Yohan for taking photos with him for the best two weeks in his life.

We want to wish Jakub all the best. We enjoyed having him here.
