When fans did not see Rista at the CARIFTA Trials, they wondered why our best 400m hurdler was not there. Everyone questioned the thinking of the coach and wondered what were his plans. Then came the Senior trials and our questions were answered. Ristananna Tracey qualified as a member of the Jamaican World Championship team to the 2011 Daegu championships. She would join the veteran Melaine Walker and the in- form Kaleise Spencer as Jamaica’s entrants in the 400m hurdles for women. What a story!

I chatted with Rista about the transition to the Senior level, her qualifying for the World Champs, her participation in the championships and her injured arm. These are her responses: ” When I ran 55 my coach felt I could run 54. He thought I was ready for the senior level. I never expected to start training so early though. I had just finished a long season of Champs and Penn Relays and all that. However, I am used to training hard. When I ran at the Penn Relays, I ran with pain from an injured ankle. I think I am mentally tough.”

When Risata participated in the Trials, she was nervous at the start because she was reminded of the big names in the lineup. At the end of the race she had an instant headache. This she said was a sign that she had run a PR. It was! She enjoyed being among the Jamaican team members. Her only disappoinment was when the Team doctor told her that her arm was fractured and she needed surgery. At the start of the race she kept wondering if it was going to hurt when she got on her marks. The World Championships experience was very good for Ristananna.
